Dr. Niall McLaren, a practicing psychiatrist for 22 years, explains what is wrong with the psychiatric profession: That this is an industry which cannot take criticism, for fear the entire model of biological psychiatry will unravel.
That there is no science to psychiatric diagnoses, no brain based diseases. And that psychiatry only pushes mental disorders as biological disease/illness in order to convince people to take psychiatric drugs, causing a host of dangerous side effects.

Green Mental Health: An Alternative to Toxic Psychiatric Drugs
Psychiatry’s solution to life’s problems is the administration of mind-altering toxic drugs which according to the FDA can cause mania, worsening depression, anxiety, delusions, seizures, liver failure, suicide, mania, heart attack, stroke, fatal blood clots, sudden death, diabetes and much more. Green Mental Health Care is a non-toxic, non-additive and non-invasive approach to mental health which focuses on workable medical, not psychiatric, solutions that have better patient outcomes and are not harmful or toxic to those seeking help…
Dr. Hyla Cass: First Do No Harm
Psychiatrist Hyla Cass describes how most psychiatrists simply label patients mentally ill based solely on symptoms and put them on dangerous and addictive drugs, instead of doing complete physical examinations to find and treat underlying medical conditions which can manifest as psychiatric symptoms.

Top APA Psychiatrist Needs Lesson in Disease vs. Disorder
The President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), psychiatrist Nada Stotland, obviously needs a bit of a lesson on the difference between a disease and a “mental disorder,” given her recent comments. Diseases can be confirmed by medical/scientific tests. Mental disorders are simply checklists of behaviors.

The DSM: Inventing Mental Illness
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is made up, it is fiction, it is fabricated by psychiatrists. Members of a panel vote on what goes into it, then they immediately start calling them “diseases”. This is fraud.

Dr John Rengen Virapen is a former scientist who after 35 years of work in the pharmaceutical industry (Eli Lilly) has left it to warn the public of the nefarious dealings and motives of the pharmaceutical industry.

I totally agree. The drugs they force the patience to use create more problems then the problems themselves. That’s not helping patiences. Its hurting them. Hurting them in the name of profit, power, and control. Something needs to be done about it.
I have listened to many experts who have expressed their views about psychiatric fraud. Well, Dr. Niall McLaren is on my top 10 for expressing so succinctly and clearly the situation.
This intelligent man has the courage to tell it like it is and go to the basic of the problem so it can be addressed correctly by those who want to stop human misery and human rights violations by psychiatry.
Nicole Crellin
The diagnosis of a psychiatric illness is simply a poke in the dark at solving a behavioral problem. It is never based on fact nor can it be proven by science. It shames the process of the scientific method. It is an insult to the human being.
The last part of the word psychiatric is “tric” and that is exactly what it is, a trick. Anyone who believes that their life can be improved by using a pill is being tricked.
The real answers lie within. Psychiatric drugs are torturous and create great suffering for an individual, making their innermost concerns insurmountable. Experiencing street drug like side effects a person is frightened and submits to a course and sometimes a lifetime of unending torture. Having been told that the diagnosis is one that a person will always have to live with that person is given a life sentence. She is pushed to begin walking in a direction filled with hellish experiences always having to live with the reminder that she is sick. The mind-altering drugs only worsen her experience making her life more and more awful as the days pass by.
Why not give this person a chance? A sober life filled with opportunities to grow and overcome her sad behaviors.
If this man discovered that psychiatry is wrong why has he continued working in the field for 22 years?!
Thank you, Dr. McLaren, for having the courage to speak out, to tell the truth. I, as a mother of a 40-year-old son with a diagnosed mental illness for 20 years, have said this for 15 years. The first 5 years I spent walking a tightrope between the lies the doctors were telling me and what my son was telling me. I finally started listening to my son and did research and study on my on and started speaking out against psychiatry and lies. It doesn’t make you popular with those who have bought into the lie, who take the money. Thank you CCHR for helping spread the truth.
well said…good man…..
Bugger the money indeed! I love this guy. It is the lives that count and psychiatry is busy destroying as many as possible before their house of cards falls down.
Their hook, as Dr. McLaren notes, that mental illnes is a brain disorder, is also their greatest weakness. They have not, can not and will not prove any brain disorder because none exists.
Find the physiological problem behind the symptom – whether it’s allergies, or an illness, or poor diet, no exercise – and handle that.
Treat the cause, not the symptom.

How refreshing to hear such honesty. As a victim/patient in 1973 I received ECT and Depixol injections (side effects – muscle stiffening). In time these two actions went a long way to wrecking my career as a professional orchestral violinist and my family life, even though I returned to playing and even though the actual problems were lack of personal care and a too sudden ill-informed vegetarian diet depriving me of essential brain nutrients omega 3, vit B12, zinc and possibly protein and iron also, since resolved. In most forms of medicine the symptom is not necessarily expected to be in the same part as the cause(s)! One cause – one problem – one expert – one solution is surely simplistic in the extreme. I have since attended reviews for others and pointed out all this and more, sadly only to be agreed with by the psychiatrist who then, in one instance suggested doubling the dose for the patient to two tablets!
What he said is really true. Especially about how your brain is diseased and the solution is to take drugs that take away your creativity and who you are. That is such a crock.
This is a sector of medicine dedicated to telling you, “you’re sick and the solution is drugs to alter your mind.” Where is the science? Where is the solution? Where is the individuality of the person being treated?
And where are my tax dollars that got spent so someone could come up with a label to give them an excuse to drug children for their “math disorders?”
I have some issues with Chronic Depression that I spent $4000 of my Army Severance Pay Package to treat with Elavil; as I’d not smoked any Pot in 3 years, and it was obvious to me that Pot had been helping me ‘make it’ through the darkest of my teenaged years.
After about 9 months (of a year of therapy, total), I started using it again, anyway (though I was desperate to ‘stay legal’).
Two months later, the Doc got me to ‘confess’ that I done this; but when I asked him, ‘How he knew’, instead of saying, “I smelled it,” or, “Your eyes are Red”, he said, “All your indicators – Mood, Appearance, Your Cheery Future Outlook – they’ve all GONE THROUGH THE ROOF; you’ve never sounded better.”
I want everyone to KNOW THIS.
That Doc risked his License, in America, in 1986 (‘The War on Marijuana’ had JUST begun!!!), to write up that he thought Pot had probably saved me from KILLING MYSELF because of ‘untreated’ Teenaged Suicidal Depression.
It wasn’t ‘untreated’, you see; and he WAS RIGHT (Spot On, if you would my dear chap).
I’ve heard the Drug Companies have done Secret Research on Pot – and that the SSRI’s are actually modeled on one of the 60+ EXO-Cannibinoid (The body itself makes ‘ENDO-Cannibinoids’ – like the one that shuts down the Pain that you’d ordinarilly feel, after a major injury, by activating the CB 50 receptors in the C/PNS) that make it through the BBB (Blood Brain Barrier).
Since Depression is REAL – even if it is often Falsly Diagnosed, for purposes of Profit – I, again, want everyone to know this!!!
I agree with this doctor however,I think there are times certain drugs have git it be used. I worked in all kinds of psychiatric settings(psychiatric unit in a general hospitol, mental health treatment unit in a state prison and a psychiatric forensic center). In all three settings it was stressed that medication alone was not the answer. Group therapy and seeing a therapist (not necessarily a psychiatrist) was the bigger part of the treatment.Having been choked and beaten up by a very psychotic man in the pstch unit ,I must admit there was at least one time there were psycotropic medication.
Some of the drugs they give patience is worse than street drugs and they are addicting like heroin.(look it up) For example, certain psychiatric drugs can give you a permanent nerve disorder over years of taking them. The disorder is called “Tardive dyskinesia” and can impair the way you think, and the way you move. They also give you uncontrollable movement of the facial muscles and stiffness in your neck and other muscles. They can leave you with a “shaking” disorder. I believe they intentionally do this to people they believe are psychotic people in order to disable the way they move so they wont potentially harm others if they stop taking their medication.
The nerve disorder is permanent but they give you another drug to take along with the other medication to suppress the nerve disorder so you won’t know about it, but if you stop taking the medication you experience the nerve disorder. You develop the disorder while you are taking the other medication and you don’t know about it. But sometimes the drug can’t suppress the nerve disorder so you have it either way.
Some of these psychiatrist mess people up intentionally in order to perpetuate their industry.
I feel I had to inform you people about this so that you and your family can avoid psychiatric drugs and hospitals so they will not ruin your life.
Psychiatry is a fraud. Tell your friends. Keep your family and friends safe. They will take your very identity, and try to scramble it.
I read many of your comments and have heard and engaged in both sides of this debate. I agree that many dollars are utilized to treat mental health disorders. I agree that there are many contributing factors to a mental illness and many dynamics to diagnosing mental health issues.
I agree that there are many misdiagnoses; however how do you all discount those who have been affected with a life-long “condition” which creates altered mood stated, hallucinations, delusions, suicidal ideation, etc… Many of those individuals have taken medications, utilized psychiatry take medication to help manage it, but also take other approaches to changing their lifestyles (i.e. diet, exercise, therapy, etc), improve, and ARE able to have a higher quality of life. Then they go off the medications and delusions, hallucinations, suicidal ideations return. I understand that many people have been handed pills as a management option, but some do need medication.
What I ask of you is to explain how to make severe mental illness symptomology cease, without psychiatry, medications that restore “chemical” “imbalances”. Many individuals who do not respond to psychiatry and claim that it was the medications that made things worse, however do not take into consideration other factors or treatment options. MANY psychiatrists understand the issues related to managed care and how to treat people within the confines of managed care systems. Unfortunately, MANAGED CARE dictates a person needing to have a diagnosis in order to receive any type of treatment for any type of mental health issue.
Should we blame psychiatry as a whole, the psychiatrists as a cohort, or blame the system of managed care? All of you make valid points, however I do not completely advocate for people to turn to dope as an alternative to coping with depression, as many studies also support the correlation between long-term pot smoking with clinical depression. I do not completely agree that all physicians or therapist/counselors take a 100% stance on the “evidenced based” approaches, or relying solely on the medical model of treatment. Again, the managed care systems insure that in order for a person to be eligible for insurance benefits, they must have been treated with the medical model.
I believe this is more of a rant now, however the purpose of this post is not to say anyone posting is inaccurate, however it is to point out that we need to continue to work as professionals, and supports for those with mental health issues as work to make the system function more efficiently as a whole. To completely discredit the psychiatric field as a whole is not going to create a change. I do get a hint of many of the posts coming from a wholly subjective tone.
I hope we all are able to keep in mind that medication is an option, it does have benefits, and it does treat some illnesses. However, there are side effects, misdiagnosis, and people who are treated when they might not have needed to be treated with an intense course of medications. Many practitioners work to eliminate or reduce issues related to these dynamics; but again we cannot simply say the whole field, the whole approach, and all involved are greedy, ignorant, malicious, or unaware of issues to treatment and diagnosis of mental illness.
I would like to acknowledge Niall McLcLaren for coming forward and admitting the truth about the psychatric scam that is going on all over the world. Thank you for this and exposing the fraud. I think more and more truth is going to continue to come out and I hope that people are seeing this and able to get off these drugs safely so they can live happily and sanely with out depression and without these drugs.
Dr. McLaren makes clear that Mental and emotional disorders are NOT diseases of the BRAIN (caused by chemical “imbalances”). Psychiatry has never proven what a proper balance IS let alone “balance” the patient’s brain chemistry with their magical potions (psych drugs).
Thus, the doctor’s statement that it is fraudulent begs psychiatry to prove without a doubt their claims, as they have ruined many lives while taking in billions of dollars for their poisonous chemistry.
I know a child that was diagnosed with ADD. He was given medication for this. The medicine made him anxious and kept his appetite suppressed. The medicine is a ‘speed’ type drug. The child had tons of energy already. He was 15 and 78 pounds, a real stick! The result was, he was out of control, AND HE WAS NOW UNAWARE. After stopping the drug, he ate and ate! No one had really seen him eat before! While he used to eat about 5 “tuna crackers” for dinner(Saltines with a dollop of tuna), he now ate full healthy meals and had seconds. And slowly, he began to learn from his mis-steps and antics, and just grew up! The pity was that he had been told there was something wrong with him; he had a deceased brain. All that was ‘wrong’ was he was just a kid, he had to taught to be responsible, given work to do, and exercise, instead of playing video games.
Thank you Dr. McLaren for coming forward and letting the public at large know what is really wrong with psychiatry today. It takes a lot of guts to come forward and speak the truth of an abusive fraudulent system. People need real solutions to real problems not lethal pills, shock treatments, lobotomies, restrains, and bogus labeling to make it in society. Human decency, healthy food, exercise, a purpose to get up out of bed every day, clothing, shelter, supportive family and friends, and a social network. I have been a medical professional for over 25 years and I have not seen anyone get better on psych medications. I’ve seen just the opposite. It’s an industry that destroys the human being from the inside out. Thank you again for speaking out.
I wholeheartedly concur. Dr. McLaren’s comments remind me of what the late movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn was quoted to say: ‘Anyone who goes to a psychiatrist should have his head examined!’ His words seemed to be saying that no matter how popular the profession of psychiatry is, they (the psychiatrists) seem to have a lot of problems themselves which they can’t solve, so how are they going to help you?
While in college, I found the study of psychology in almost every phase of my curriculum; from education and business to banking and finance; although, I never found any real scientific evidence to prove the many theories advanced by psychology. I also witnessed the harm done to friends who ended up in psychiatric care/facilities. Once they went in, they were never any good to themselves or society afterwards. That is why I find the comments made by Dr. McLaren to be so helpful and beneficial. I know almost everyone has seen the results of and affects of psychiatry on the homeless population.
This video must be circulated regardless of how uncomfortable it may be or sound to the professional psychiatrist.
sir,I agree that psychiatric diseases are never confirmed diagnoses and there are no laboratory tests to confirm the diagnoses and there is no permanent cure either ;but one does see psychiatric patients behave in an improved way after initiation of treatment-they get good sleep, are better oriented and easy to handle. This shows that medicine has worked and surely a day will come when we may be able to bring back psychiatric patients to normal levels .Till then there is no other system/pathy either which can show results that are better than the one being practised today.
FINALLY a man brave enough to come out and say in all honesty that his profession in a SCAM !!!!!!!! Its not an easy thing to do the guy has been involved in the “industry of death” for 22 years and probably makes his living out of it. PSYCHIATRY kills people !!!!!!and it is based on LIES !!! You just heard from a man who has studied in full the “SCIENCE” behind Psychiatry and practiced it for years and he is even saying its all a buch of unfounded lies!!!!
Dont be blind to the truth! Make others aware of whats happening ! Protect your family, friends and children from suffering at the hands of psychiatry’s vicious practice of drugging and electro shock therapy!!
I am a volunteer for an organisation which lets the truth be known and victims be heard go to http://www.cchr.org and find out the truth behind psychiatry for yourself, and support a group that cares about the victims and protects the community through CORRECT information.
These are quite simply Crimes Against Humanity and should be dealt with as such, across the board!
I could only applaud the stand. I hope the exposure continues. The claims of Psychiatry are false. Nor will the day come when Psychiatry can do what they claim. There have been no known cures or causes to “Mental Illness” that it itself is evidentual. The irrational generalisations made on those who reportedly suffer severely are then in turn diagnosed on the minimalistic general public with complete disregard for any individuality, circumstances, up-bringing, experiences etc. Psychiatry has not learned a thing from there innacuracies that lead to ice-pick labotamys in thousands, they continue in a devious and decietful manner. It is a fraudelent occupation solely for the benefit of the profession at the expense of many.Perhaps if they add to their magical DSM such disorders in the same fashion for the public as then to psychiatry, the likes of: False Beliefs, Obsessive Prescribing Disorder, Lack of Humanity Disorder, Generalised Diagnosis Disorder, Fraudelent Claims Disorder, Money above Patient Disorder, these are no less than what Psychiatry already admits to the DSM.
If some were to consider the fact that the ability of Psychiatry is able to picture the historical experiences, condition and psychology of anothers mind without more than a session of words then they would also know from this written comment and eveluate how 15Gb of Windows Vista operates in all extents. Yeh Right !
Psychiatry does not possess the power of the : “The Mind Meld” and it takes far more than the time given to understand the Human mind and its Psychology and experiences of 30 years if that age. Maybe the Drugs and treatment to a degree has advanced but the understanding and operation of the Human Mind by Psychiatry is still extremely “PRIMATIVE” and never able to keep pace with modern man. Why must mankind be judged for “Illness” by these few against a Pristine and Perfect Model of a Man in an imperfect, un-predictable and over-demanding World that most struggle to cope completely.
I respect and thank for taking your stand Dr McClaren.
Unfortunately, there is so much truth to the fact that Psychiatry is really not a proven field of scientific study. However, seldom do you hear of the body’s ability to heal itself and that the immune system is well able to do what is necessary for whatever ails one. Since our westernized medical practitioners practice predominately palliative medicine they have missed (whether purposefully or not) the FACT that ‘good’ sound nutrition will most often than not take care of the release of the ‘proper’ neurotransmission in one’s brain to eliminate negative symptoms. (ie. low serotonin in women and low dopamine in men that correlates with depression). We are what we eat! Let’s focus on the GMO’s connection with Big Pharma and ‘Agrinomics’ of today’s food ‘industry’. If we ate ‘real’ food we would be able to maintain a homeostasis in brain chemistry. And, that is scientifically sound information.
Im 13, but I wanna become a Psychiatrist that helps people who are having trouble in relationships. What’s this kind called, if there’s one. What’s the best school for psychiatrist’s? What are the different kinds, and which ones get payed the most?
Thanks, please email me back at Rooseveltboh@yahoo.com
Okay… but are there clear cut alternative solutions and remedies…?
I understand the evils of medication. I intend to become a psychiatrist with the idea to help people, using medication as little as possible. However, it would be possible to deny that there are situations where medication is beneficial. Just medicaiton is a stall. You have to find the problem and treat it either physically(non drug related) or through psychotherapy and other therapeutic means. I agree that psychiatry is a overmedicated profession, but that is something that is slowly being changed. ADD and mild ADHD I believe are just kids being kids. However, I do know kids with severe ADHD whose lives are improved by medication. So psychiatry itself isn’t whats wrong, its the practice and philosophy that is used by the MAJORITY. Though I won’t be in that majority. Besides, it is slowly changing. People’s lives can change for the better through psychiatry or psychology. I myself changed a few things and definately improved my life through a few sessions of therapy. So don’t be so quick to condemn psychiatry as a whole. Hope I opened a mind or two from at least completely writing of psychiatry.
