When multiple birth defects occur together and have a similar cause, they are called syndromes (e.g. Drug Withdrawal Syndrome Neonatal, Foetal Distress Syndrome, Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome)).

Drug Withdrawal Syndrome Neonatal Refers to the characteristic signs and symptoms that appear when a drug that causes physical dependence is regularly used for a long time and then suddenly discontinued or decreased in dosage. Also known as abstinence syndrome. A group of unpleasant symptoms produced by the abrupt termination of drug taking. These symptoms, commonly called withdrawal symptoms, include anxiety, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, tremor, and a rapid heart beat.

Dyskinesia An impairment in the ability to control movements, characterized by spasmodic or repetitive motions or lack of coordination.

Dyspnoea Difficulty in breathing, often associated with lung or heart disease and resulting in shortness of breath. Also called air hunger.

Dysstasia Difficulty in standing.

Ectopic Pregnancy In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants in a location outside the uterus and tries to develop there. The word ectopic means "in an abnormal place or position." The most common site is the fallopian tube, the tube that normally carries eggs from the ovary to the uterus. However, ectopic pregnancy can also occur in the ovary, the abdomen, and the cervical canal (the opening from the uterus to the vaginal canal). The phrases tubal pregnancy, ovarian pregnancy, cervical pregnancy, and abdominal pregnancy refer to the specific area of an ectopic pregnancy.

Facial Dysmorphism A dysmorphism is an anatomical malformation.th lung or heart disease and resulting in shortness of breath. Also called air hunger.

Foetal Distress Syndrome An abnormal condition of a fetus during gestation or at the time of delivery, marked by altered heart rate or rhythm and leading to compromised blood flow or changes in blood chemistry.

Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs during pregnancy. Like other forms of diabetes, gestational diabetes involves a defect in the way the body processes and uses sugars (glucose) in the diet. In diabetes, blood levels of glucose remain abnormally high. In many forms of diabetes, this is because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. In gestational diabetes, the pancreas is not at fault. Instead, the problem is in the placenta. During pregnancy, the placenta provides the baby with nourishment. It also produces a number of hormones that interfere with the body's usual response to insulin. This condition is referred to as "insulin resistance." Most pregnant women do not suffer from gestational diabetes, because the pancreas works to produce extra quantities of insulin in order to compensate for insulin resistance. However, when a woman's pancreas cannot produce enough extra insulin, blood levels of glucose stay abnormally high, and the woman is considered to have gestational diabetes.

Hypotonia Decrease of normal tonicity or tension, especially diminution of intraocular pressure or of muscle tone.

Hypovolemia Low blood volume.

Oligohydramnios A deficiency in the amount of amniotic fluid.

Pre-Eclampsia Abnormal state of pregnancy characterized by hypertension and fluid retention and albuminuria (the presence of albumin in the urine, sometimes indicating kidney disease); if untreated, can lead to eclampsia (coma and convulsions before, during, or shortly after childbirth, characterized by edema, hypertension, and proteinuria).

Trisomy A condition in which an extra copy of a chromosome is present in the cell nuclei, causing developmental abnormalities.

Trisomy 8 Warkany syndrome 2, also known as trisomy 8, is a chromosomal aberration that has severe effects on the fetus. Complete trisomy 8 frequently results in miscarriage, while those with "trisomy 8 mosaicism" are more likely to survive. Common findings include retarded psychomotor development, moderate to severe mental retardation, variable growth patterns which can result in either abnormally short or tall stature, an expressionless face, and many musculoskeletal, visceral, and eye abnormalities, as well as other anomalies.

Trisomy 18 Edwards' syndrome is caused by an extra (third) copy of chromosome 18. The extra chromosome is lethal for most babies born with this condition. It causes major physical abnormalities and severe mental retardation. Very few children afflicted with this syndrome survive beyond the first year.

Trisomy 21 Down syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation and malformation in a newborn. It occurs because of the presence of an extra chromosome. The extra chromosome in Down syndrome is labeled number 21. For this reason, the existence of three such chromosomes is sometimes referred to as Trisomy 21.

Turner's Syndrome A chromosomal disorder affecting females wherein one of the two X-chromosomes is defective or completely absent.

In Turner syndrome, an error occurring very early in development results in an abnormal number and arrangement of chromosomes. Most commonly, an individual with Turner syndrome will be born with 45 chromosomes in each cell rather than 46. The missing chromosome is an X-chromosome. The affected person is always female.
Individuals with Turner syndrome may have a short neck with a webbed appearance, a low hairline at the back of the neck, and low-set ears. Hands and feet of affected individuals may be swollen or puffy at birth, and often have soft nails that turn upward at the ends when they are older. All these features appear to be due to obstruction of the lymphatic system during fetal development. Another characteristic cosmetic feature is the presence of multiple pigmented nevi, which are colored spots on the skin. Almost all individuals with Turner syndrome have short stature. Unknown genes on the X-chromosome regulate the development and functions of the ovary. Most individuals with Turner syndrome experience loss of ovarian function early in childhood, and thus do not enter puberty at the normal age. From 5-10% of children with Turner syndrome are found to have a severe constriction of the major blood vessel coming out from the heart, a condition known as "coarctation of the aorta." This defect is thought to be the result of an obstructed lymphatic system compressing the developing aorta during fetal life. Kidney problems are present in approximately 1/3 of individuals with Turners and may contribute to high blood pressure. There is a high incidence of osteoporosis--meaning thin or weak bones--in women with Turner syndrome. Osteoporosis leads to loss of height, curvature of the spine and increased bone fractures. Type II diabetes, also known as insulin resistant diabetes (glucose intolerance), has a high occurrence rate in individuals with Turner syndrome. Approximately 1/3 of individuals with Turner syndrome have a thyroid disorder, usually hypothyroidism. Symptoms of this condition include decreased energy, dry skin, cold-intolerance and poor growth.

MedWatch Reporting by Consumers

MedWatch is the Food and Drug Administration's program for reporting any undesirable experience associated with the use of a medical product. If you think you or someone in your family has experienced an adverse reaction from taking Escitalopram and it has not been reported to the FDA, see this page for instructions on reporting the adverse event through your doctor or directly to the FDA using an online form.

A May 2006 USA Today article states that "drug companies are required to file any reports they have to the FDA, but consumers and doctors report such events on a voluntary basis. Studies suggest the FDA's Adverse Events Reporting System database captures only 1% to 10% of drug-induced side effects and deaths, "maybe even less than 1%," says clinical pharmacologist Alastair J.J. Wood, an associate dean at Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville. So the real number of cases is almost certainly much higher".
