My mother has ben depressed for three years now and the doctors want to give her ETC. We live in Sweden where ECT is most used in the hole world. Every member of my family including my mum are against the teraphy, but the doctors wants to give it to her against her will.

I have met many people who have been hospitalized and treated against their will. They do still use ect and it is so very very wrong. Psychiatry is killing us as a society.

more survived ect than didnt. My Mom suffered from what we now call after birth depression in 1963. Her baby was born with a serious heart defect which was very stressful for her. Mom went away to get better at dewitt hospital. months later she returned to us. Or did she return to us? she certainly was not the same Mommy I loved so dearly. Her eyes looked hollowed and she brought home bags of colorful pills. Now my mom pre ect had never hardly taken asprin, yet now she took all kinds of drugs. and she took drugs for the rest of her life. I asked Mom later what had ot been like. She said “well I knew there was something wrong with me, and i knew i wanted to get better. The first time I was very willing to submit. after that first time I fought tooth and nail because i knew it was a bad thing. The made me have it over and over saying it was not up to me”.
Life for her children was a roller coaster from then on very happy, or very sad. never a medium of normalcy. Please watch the youtube I made in honor of my Mom.

OK DR – put your money where your mouth is. 1) Cite the hospital where all these miraculous “cures” of people having electricity shot through their brain occurred. 2) Cite the studies showing the efficacy of ECT 3) Cite the studies saying memory loss is rare 4) Answer the question of why international laws have to be enacted requiring INFORMED CONSENT if no one has ECT without it? (you can look these up online if you are familiar with a search engine called GOOGLE….if not difficult to find… And finally, 4) Cite your professional credentials of why anyone should believe you that ECT is safe, effective and doesn’t harm anyone. We’re sure there are a lot of people that would like to talk to you about those claims. We know we would.
We’re waiting….

I watched “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” in 1975 and came out of the theater absolutley floored. 35 years later the barbarity of ECT depicted in that movie continues … Psychiatry MUST be extinguished if humanity is to survive. I am glad to see CCHR’s goal is nothing short of that.

Wow, you really really really need to do some unbiased research. I worked in a hospital where ECT is given for people with severe depression who are unresponsive to medication. ECT is like a miracle for these individuals. No one is given ECT unless it is a last resort as there can be side-effects, like every other medical procedure. But for individuals who are stuck in depression and can’t get out, it is nothing short of a miracle and they will tell you that. It is VERY rare for someone to have severe persistent memory loss, and the patients I spoke to said whatever side-effects they had were completely worth getting their lives back. So anyone on this site with a brain, do your own research–real research. Look at studies on ECT and depression. Ask psychiatrists you may come across. Don’t listen to biased, agenda-driven individuals. There would be countless individuals far far worse off without ECT.

In 2003 due to several suicides in my immediate family of which i witnessed, I was diagnosed with major depression/ anxiety disorders also. I was told that all meds are not helping me, so ECT was administered, there was 67 shocks given to me in an 8 month period. I have lost my memory, both long and short term, Had to medically retire from a good paying govt job. Them shocks didnt erase what I had seen at all, yet it did erase my childhood, my 4daughters childhood and daily events. Where is the justice at for this torture ????

In response to the people on this site who have commented regarding the truth of this article. Do they use electric shock in Australia? Yes. Are they suffering because of it? Yes. Does it affect them in very many negative ways and often destroy their life? Yes. How do I know for sure? They turn up on my couch. Lost, in pain and looking for answers. I am a natural therapist and work with some people who have suffered because of this barbaric treatment.I know it is shocking to read about these things and hard to believe. Believe it. It could one day be happening to someone you love dearly. If its not taken care of now it will be too late then. Its time to listen please.

We should colaboratively and tirelessly continue to research on these cruel treatments and expose them and discourage them as much as possible .This article though depressing is creating some awareness on the extent of some abusive things taking place in the world. Keep sending more information.We should lok for better decent treatment than electric shocks
